The project Active and healthy Olympian and Paraolympian Seniors is tackling the physical activity of EU citizen especially elderly people. The main objective of the project is to increase the possibilities of elderly for involvement in physical activity with the special focus on the Olympians and Paraolympians after their retirement from competitive sport.
Scholars report about numerous positive effects of regular physical activity on the whole lifespan. Elite athletes were extremely physically active in younger age but they are less active in later age (65+), therefore, the project aims to lower the risk of non-active life style in the group of former elite athletes after the end of their sport career.
The main purpose of the project is to prepare an exercising model and present recommendations for training for the elderly based on the empirical research and an experiment with professionally prepared and coached exercise programme for the groups and individual former elite athletes. The research findings could contribute to successful transitions after retirement and serve as a base for the proposals for holistic systematic support for elite athletes.
By outlining cases of good practice, former elite athletes can be presented as role models. With the Manual for adapted physical activity programme for the elderly and workshops, we will offer a guide for individuals, former athletes and non-athletes, exercise practitioners and organisations who wish to implement physical activity programmes for the elderly that foster the long-term health and well-being.
